One of the greatest things about working in the Boston area is all the great web companies and emerging technologies that are being hatched here.

Every few months the Web Innovators Group meets in Cambridge and displays several of these start ups. The Web Innovators Group (WebInno) is comprised of people engaged in internet and mobile innovation in the Boston area. There is no cost for attending these events and they are a great networking and learning resource.

Webino was founded by David Besiel, of the venture capital firm, Venrock and he blogs at www.GenuineVC.com.

I shot a video of my trip into the event that I hope to have up soon. Here’s a synopsis of the companies presenting at the last event.

Givvy – Is a website that allows you to give, research and track your contributions to non profits and charities. It has a database of nearly 1.5 million of these organiztions in the US.

Brring - Is a free ringback service. With Brring you can upload your own music or audio files and personalize your ringback tone for your friends to hear when they call.

Pixily – Allows you to store and organize your paper and digital information online.

TuneRooms – Allows you to create and collaborate on music projects online.

PeopleAhead – A career matching and job matching site.

JobVent – An anonymous site to share what you like or don’t like about a company. Caveat lector!

VendorCity - An online word-of-mouth referral service for vendors in your area.

OpenVote – Facebook application that lets students poll each other on campus and across the country.

RunKeeper – An iPhone application that allows you to track various aspects of your running activities.
