Wordcamp Boston 2010

Jan. 24th 2010

By Al Morel

Dan and I took a trip to the Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge to attend the iaugural edition of Wordcamp Boston. This was a great opportunity to meet with other WordPress enthusiasts, find out what others are doing, and search for partners to work with for future projects.

We learned a breat deal, met some amazing people and renewed some old friendships. I didn’t have an opportunity to do allot of video work, but I was able to capture three Wordcamp Boston  luminaries:

1) Jake Goldman, one of the event organizers, shares the genesis of the first Wordcamp Boston event. Jake is the Director of Client Services at C. Murray Consulting in Providence, RI

2) Karen Rubin of Hubspot, an inbound marketing leader, gave a great presentation on blogging at the conference, and here, she shares a little secret.

3) Ned Watson, of 1080d Consulting, showed how he’s using WordPress for Time Inc. and some of their online titles such as Entertainment Weekly and People. Here, he shares some of his enthusiasm for a new project he’s working on: an online wireframing application, that sounds pretty exciting.

Many organizations are in complete chaos with advent of free on the web. You don’t have to look any further than the music and publishing industries to see the the mayhem.

Chris Anderson, editor of Wired Magazine and Author of the bestseller, “Free: The Future of a Radical Price” explains about the new economies of our favorite word: FREE.

Getting Started with Social Media

Jan. 25th 2009

By Al Morel

Recently, we hosted an educational/networking event at the CommAREus worldwide headquarters (Al’s house) and the topic was The ABCs of Social Media, presented by Kevin Skarritt at Acorn Creative.

This was one in a series of events for the New England Web Developers Association, NEWDA. (You can see Kevin’s complete presention with accompanying PowerPoint on the NEWDA home page.)

As with most things with the internet, there’s so much to it. So how does one get started? Learn to earn! Dan and I have started to read a couple of the books recommened at the event:

Here is Kevin’s suggested reading list:
The New Rules of Marketing and PR – by David Meerman Scott
Groundswell – by Charlene Li and Josh Burnhoff
Naked Conversations – by Shel Israel and Robert Scoble
Citizen Marketers – by Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba
Wikinomics – by Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams

NEWDA is Launched!

Oct. 31st 2008

by Al Morel

Recently, Dan and I, along with a group of fellow collaborators, launched a group called the New England Web Developers Association or NEWDA.

As many know that have followed the formation of CommAREus, we have run several edu/networking events over these past two years. It’s a great way to meet others in the web world and to share ideas and jobs. There are a few that think that they can do it all themselves, but it’s apparent to most of us that you really need a team of people to create a great website.

I would like to thank my fellow collaborators and state coordinators in this exiting endeavor:
Connecticut: Marjorie Clark of Little Fish Studios
Maine: Ken Pooley of Customer Ergonomics
New Hampshire: Kevin Skarritt of Acorn Creative
Maine: Paul Fleming of Fleming + Co.
Vermont: Tim Nitz of Panther Internet

In addition, I’d like to give a special thanks to Hans Riemer of Market-Vantage who gave a great presentation on Google’s Adwords program.

For more information on NEWDA, go to our website: www.newda.org
And, of course, come to one of our events!
